He's a bit frightened at first, but over the course of the next year acquires not only a shell, but also an array of sea creatures to decorate, clean, and protect his new home. The story ends with the hermit crab outgrowing his shell. He finds a new "tenant" to look after his friends and sets off to find a much bigger shell.

The text is about a hermit crab who searches for a new house. He tries a rock, some driftwood, a plastic pail, and a net. Nothing suits him until he gets washed to sea by a great massive wave. The hermit crab must find a place to hide from his enemies. An empty sea snail shell provides the perfect home for the hermit crab.
